general population (perhaps exclud<strong>in</strong>g over 75s) this still equates <strong>to</strong><br />

£2 million at the box office. If the deaf and hard of hear<strong>in</strong>g population<br />

attended as frequently as the rest of the population, this would equate<br />

<strong>to</strong> 6.4 million more annual admissions or about £19 million at the box<br />

office. There are 9 million deaf and hard of hear<strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong> the UK<br />

and 2 million bl<strong>in</strong>d or partially sighted people, so significant numbers<br />

of these communities are under-served and improv<strong>in</strong>g access<br />

represents a good market opportunity.<br />

4.3.6 How audiences select films<br />

Manual workers see film as enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, compared <strong>to</strong> higher<br />

occupational groups who expect more cerebral stimulus from art<br />

house films and want <strong>to</strong> support <strong>in</strong>dependent companies. <strong>Film</strong><br />

generally is consumed largely though broadcast media, such as<br />

television, DVD and videos (Bennett et al 2005). The role of the critic<br />

can make a big difference. Many people report that they receive their<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about film through television and radio reviews (BFI 2000).<br />

Choice of film was also <strong>in</strong>fluenced by a good s<strong>to</strong>ry l<strong>in</strong>e, followed by<br />

who stars <strong>in</strong> films.<br />

Most films are usually assigned an identity of be<strong>in</strong>g either major or<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent (Zuckerman and Kim 2003). These authors carried out an<br />

analysis of 396 feature films released <strong>in</strong> 1997 which showed films<br />

attracted a larger audience when critics specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> major releases<br />

reviewed the film and categorised it for the mass market. These films<br />
