• Half of people over 55 never go <strong>to</strong> the c<strong>in</strong>ema.<br />

and semi-professional occupations.<br />
• The film audience is evenly split between male and female.<br />
• The female 35+ c<strong>in</strong>ema audience is larger than the male 15-24<br />

• On average, m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic people go <strong>to</strong> the c<strong>in</strong>ema more often<br />
than the UK population overall. This may reflect their younger<br />
age profile. They are also over-represented <strong>in</strong> the DVD rental<br />
and the pay-per-view audience, but under-represented <strong>in</strong> the<br />
DVD retail audience.<br />
• For some people (of all ethnic groups) cost is a barrier <strong>to</strong> c<strong>in</strong>ema<br />
attendance.<br />
• Disabled people are under-represented <strong>in</strong> all film audiences<br />
except DVD retail.<br />
• The audience for film on television is much larger (x20) than the<br />
c<strong>in</strong>ema audience and is skewed <strong>to</strong>wards older age groups and<br />
people engaged <strong>in</strong> manual occupations.<br />
• There are significant differences <strong>in</strong> audience demographics<br />
depend<strong>in</strong>g on the genre of the film.<br />
• Neither white audiences nor m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic people want<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic work <strong>to</strong> be ’ghet<strong>to</strong>ised’.<br />
• Initiatives <strong>to</strong> support disabled access <strong>to</strong> c<strong>in</strong>emas have been<br />
successful, but experience shows that <strong>in</strong>terventions have <strong>to</strong> be<br />
carefully designed <strong>to</strong> meet disabled persons’ needs.<br />
