20<strong>07</strong>). The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) estimates that <strong>in</strong> less<br />
than five years, only 20% of the workforce will be white able-bodied,<br />
male and under 45 (CRE 20<strong>07</strong>).<br />
People over 45 currently comprise 47% of the adult population. Over<br />
the next 30 years, their numbers will expand dramatically, and by the<br />
year 2031 60 % of adults will be over 45 years of age.<br />
More women with very young children are enter<strong>in</strong>g /re-enter<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
labour market and attitudes <strong>to</strong>wards work and roles with<strong>in</strong> families are<br />
chang<strong>in</strong>g. Forecasts suggest that over 1.3 million new jobs will be<br />
created <strong>in</strong> the next decade and 12 million jobs will become available<br />
as workers leave the workplace. A lot of these jobs <strong>in</strong> professional<br />
management and service roles will be taken by women (Women and<br />
Work Commission 2006).<br />
Government figures put the numbers of gay people <strong>in</strong> the UK at more<br />
than 3 million (S<strong>to</strong>newall estimates are even higher <strong>–</strong> see below). Over<br />
half of gays and lesbians conceal their sexual orientation at work, may<br />
feel stressed as a result, yet ‘out’ employees <strong>in</strong> safe environments earn<br />
50% more than their closeted peers (S<strong>to</strong>newall 2006).<br />
Leaders are under current pressure <strong>to</strong> encourage ‘diversity’ <strong>in</strong> the<br />
workforce because of demographic change (see DTI 2004 p13-16).<br />
