women experience age<strong>in</strong>g differently. For example women over 40<br />
received only 24% of all women’s act<strong>in</strong>g roles, compared <strong>to</strong> men aged<br />
over 40 who received 37% of all act<strong>in</strong>g roles. The term ‘older’, they<br />
argue, applies <strong>to</strong> women over 30 and men over 40. This discrim<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
<strong>in</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g roles and age also extends <strong>to</strong> screenwriters.<br />
Reasons for this age and gender discrepancy <strong>in</strong>clude the film<br />
producers’ preferences and the fact that they are act<strong>in</strong>g out of beliefs<br />
about audience preferences, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the attractiveness of women.<br />
For example, one quarter of previous actresses had been models<br />
(L<strong>in</strong>coln and Allen 2004). Men’s perceived attractiveness rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />
unaffected by age, whereas women’s perceived attractiveness<br />
decreases with age. These practices have serious implications for<br />
cultural role models, whereby the film tells the audience men are more<br />
important and produces idealised images of them, whereas women are<br />
culturally devalued (L<strong>in</strong>coln and Allen op. cit.). There do not appear <strong>to</strong><br />
be any research studies <strong>in</strong> the UK of this k<strong>in</strong>d.<br />
3.4.6 Assumptions about m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups’ and women’s<br />
competence<br />
Some <strong>in</strong>terviewees <strong>in</strong> screenwrit<strong>in</strong>g feel that work<strong>in</strong>g relationships<br />
between people were affected by gender for women <strong>in</strong> power-based<br />
roles, such as direc<strong>to</strong>r or producer roles. The authors quote a<br />
screenwriter who expressed the challenges as:<br />
