The percentages of various groups who work in the sector are given in
Table 3.2. This information is based on the Feature Film Production
Surveys (Skillset and UK Film Council) for 2002 and 2006. The data
show an under-representation of women, black and minority ethnic
groups, people with disabilities and young people aged 16-24 relative
to their participation in the wider UK workforce. Over the four years
from 2002 to 2006 there was a slight increase in the proportion of
women and people with disabilities in the sector, and a 5% increase in
those aged 16-24. The numbers of older people aged 50 or over
dropped to 17% in 2006 from 21% in 2002 though the sector had more
people in their middle years (aged 35-49) than the rest of the UK
workforce.
The sector is skewed towards the employment of older, white men in
professional roles, though there is evidence that younger people have
recently entered the industry (Skillset and UK Film Council 2005b and
Skillset and UK Film Council Project Update 2007).
