This review br<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong>gether research on diversity <strong>in</strong> film so that gaps<br />
<strong>in</strong> current research can be identified. Chapter 2 highlights the context<br />
of British film, its fund<strong>in</strong>g, the culture of the sec<strong>to</strong>r and the diversity<br />
strategy so far. Chapter 3 exam<strong>in</strong>es the statistics about under-<br />
represented groups <strong>in</strong> the film workforce, access and progression<br />
issues, and explores the experiences of under-represented groups <strong>in</strong><br />
tackl<strong>in</strong>g barriers. Chapter 4 reviews audience composition and the<br />
genre of films that rema<strong>in</strong> popular with diverse audiences. Chapter 5<br />
explores the debates on portrayal of under-represented groups;<br />
considers whether employment of certa<strong>in</strong> groups changes the way<br />
characters are portrayed <strong>in</strong> film; and <strong>in</strong>cludes a discussion about<br />
complex debates on ‘ghet<strong>to</strong>isation’, films for the British nation, and<br />
stereotyp<strong>in</strong>g. Chapter 6 presents the case for diversity <strong>in</strong> film. It<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>es demographic change, spend<strong>in</strong>g power of groups, and<br />
studies which demonstrate that a diverse workforce and changes <strong>in</strong> on<br />
screen portrayal can benefit the <strong>in</strong>dustry. Chapter 7 concludes with<br />
recommendations for change, and identifies gaps <strong>in</strong> research priorities<br />
<strong>in</strong> diversity <strong>in</strong> film.<br />
This research has implications for policy implementation on diversity,<br />
the next steps for the UK <strong>Film</strong> Council, and its strategic partnerships<br />
with others <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
