• <strong>Film</strong>s that get made may lack the female perspective, just as<br />

fewer m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic or disabled staff <strong>in</strong> film mak<strong>in</strong>g may result<br />

<strong>in</strong> a lack of their perspectives. British films may be less<br />

heterogeneous as a consequence.<br />

• S<strong>in</strong>ce most bus<strong>in</strong>ess now is <strong>in</strong>ternational, the <strong>in</strong>dustry needs<br />

skills <strong>in</strong> trad<strong>in</strong>g goods and services across borders and <strong>in</strong><br />

multiple languages. A diverse workforce will aid negotiation and<br />

communication, and represent a progressive image <strong>to</strong> the rest of<br />

the world.<br />

• Corporate reputation can be damaged by negative publicity or<br />

discrim<strong>in</strong>ation cases that reach the courts.<br />

Priorities for action and research<br />

• All publicly-funded film bodies should consider ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diversity by sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry standards on diversity.<br />

• Carry out studies <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> ac<strong>to</strong>rs and roles allocated by under-<br />

represented groups, whether they are cast <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidental or<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g roles <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g types of roles portrayed.<br />

• Industry decision makers need <strong>to</strong> be sensitised <strong>to</strong> the<br />

narrowness <strong>in</strong> which talent for the <strong>in</strong>dustry is recruited and be<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a regular dialogue about next steps <strong>to</strong> recruit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

talent that are right for them.<br />

• Carry out a study <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> career pathways of under represented<br />

groups compared <strong>to</strong> white able-bodied middle-class men’s<br />

pathways.<br />
