6.3 The bus<strong>in</strong>ess case <strong>–</strong> an overview<br />
There are several strands <strong>to</strong> the bus<strong>in</strong>ess case:<br />
demographic change is a reality and will force us sooner or later<br />
<strong>to</strong> review our notions of who should work <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry;<br />
consumers have chang<strong>in</strong>g expectations and considerable buy<strong>in</strong>g<br />
power <strong>–</strong> they are critical <strong>to</strong> our <strong>in</strong>dustry’s success;<br />
there are l<strong>in</strong>ks between diversity <strong>in</strong> the workplace and bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
performance <strong>–</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular companies need <strong>to</strong> consider how <strong>to</strong><br />
maximise the use of talent;<br />
companies’ reputations can be damaged by failure <strong>to</strong> address<br />
diversity issues;<br />
companies have obligations <strong>to</strong> meet new legal requirements on<br />
employment and failure <strong>to</strong> do so can be very costly.<br />
These issues are considered below.<br />
6.3.1 Demographic change and the workplace<br />
Chapter 2 highlighted the move from equal opportunities <strong>to</strong> diversity<br />
and the demographic changes which will compel us <strong>to</strong> change our<br />
behaviours <strong>in</strong> recruit<strong>in</strong>g talent for our labour market. The changes <strong>in</strong><br />
wider society, with recognition of the need for ‘excluded’ groups <strong>in</strong> an<br />
expand<strong>in</strong>g service sec<strong>to</strong>r have led <strong>to</strong> a change of discourse about<br />
need<strong>in</strong>g those ‘other’ than white middle-class men <strong>in</strong> the labour<br />
market. Demographic changes have led <strong>to</strong> a push <strong>to</strong>wards a bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
