• Disabled people are under-represented as ac<strong>to</strong>rs and<br />

filmmakers <strong>in</strong> the UK. There are few portrayals of disability as<br />

an ord<strong>in</strong>ary everyday phenomenon. When they do appear,<br />

disabled people are often portrayed as asexual, crim<strong>in</strong>als or<br />

freaks.<br />

• People from m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups <strong>in</strong> the UK feel they are both<br />

under-represented and negatively stereotyped <strong>in</strong> British films<br />

and wish <strong>to</strong> see films more closely related <strong>to</strong> their day-<strong>to</strong>-day<br />

lives.<br />

• All groups do not want <strong>to</strong> be solely <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

‘ghet<strong>to</strong>ised’ films.<br />

The case for diversity <strong>in</strong> film<br />

• The Commission for Racial Equality estimates that <strong>in</strong> less than<br />

five years, only 20% of the workforce will be white, able-bodied,<br />

male and under 45. The drive <strong>to</strong> recruit from a broad range of<br />

talent rema<strong>in</strong>s critical for the future of the sec<strong>to</strong>r. A diverse<br />

workforce can <strong>in</strong>crease organisational effectiveness and<br />

maximise use of talent.<br />

• Educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment is not a major fac<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong> discrepancies<br />

between groups recruited <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the film sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

• The size and spend<strong>in</strong>g power of the older, gay, disabled and<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic population groups is very large but these<br />

markets are not always unders<strong>to</strong>od properly by ma<strong>in</strong>stream<br />

providers.<br />
