• In film production, 81% of staff were recruited by word of mouth<br />
with half be<strong>in</strong>g approached by a producer or direc<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
• Almost half of the film and video workforce is freelance, which<br />
may legitimise <strong>in</strong>formal methods of recruitment. There is much<br />
job <strong>in</strong>security.<br />
• Black and m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic employees were more likely <strong>to</strong> do<br />
unpaid work <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r than their white counterparts<br />
• Both employers and m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic perspective employees felt<br />
that many students did not have the right qualifications <strong>to</strong> enter<br />
the <strong>in</strong>dustry, and that media studies courses may not teach the<br />
practical skills necessary <strong>to</strong> enter the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
• M<strong>in</strong>ority Ethnic led (MEL) companies feel that <strong>in</strong> the<br />
commission<strong>in</strong>g process, there is a lack of clarity and openness<br />
<strong>in</strong> decision mak<strong>in</strong>g, with respondents identify<strong>in</strong>g a lack of<br />
dialogue about their projects and the <strong>in</strong>accessibility of decision<br />
makers<br />
• Women and m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups feel <strong>in</strong>directly discrim<strong>in</strong>ated<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>in</strong> the film sec<strong>to</strong>r. Break<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>stream has<br />
been def<strong>in</strong>ed as a barrier for ethnic m<strong>in</strong>ority owned bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />
