bus<strong>in</strong>ess and f<strong>in</strong>ance, as well as <strong>to</strong> keep up with chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technologies;<br />
60% reported difficulties <strong>in</strong> access<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g because of fear of<br />
los<strong>in</strong>g work and tak<strong>in</strong>g time out;<br />
20% thought tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was high risk and fees were <strong>to</strong>o high;<br />
42% emphasised the competitiveness of the sec<strong>to</strong>r and stated<br />
there were <strong>to</strong>o many people <strong>in</strong> the field.<br />

3.4.2 Network<strong>in</strong>g among m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups<br />
It should come as no surprise that some groups use their own<br />
networks <strong>to</strong> progress <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r. In a London-based survey, more<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic workers had used friends and word of mouth than<br />
white workers (35% compared with 28%) <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g their current jobs<br />
(Holgate 2006: 2). The author argues that because this is such an<br />
important way <strong>to</strong> secure employment, m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic workers are<br />
“More reliant on people they have worked with previously <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>d their next job than white workers because previous colleagues are<br />
aware of their skills and experience.” Almost two thirds of m<strong>in</strong>ority<br />
ethnic respondents <strong>in</strong> the IES study on m<strong>in</strong>ority-led companies (MEL)<br />
felt that a lack of junior positions offer<strong>in</strong>g a first rung <strong>in</strong> the ladder<br />
