paid. Women are under-represented <strong>in</strong> screenwrit<strong>in</strong>g, but we have no<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation about other under-represented groups <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g or direct<strong>in</strong>g. Ac<strong>to</strong>rs are more equitably represented <strong>in</strong> film;<br />
however, there is no <strong>in</strong>formation about lead<strong>in</strong>g roles or types of roles<br />
allocated.<br />
Two of the UK <strong>Film</strong> Council’s national funds allocated for film<br />
production and writ<strong>in</strong>g show under-representation by m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic<br />
groups, women and people with disabilities. Regional fund allocation<br />
is more equitable. The erratic hours and the fact that the sec<strong>to</strong>r is<br />
primarily based <strong>in</strong> London and the South East suggest travel barriers<br />
for women <strong>in</strong> the regions who have car<strong>in</strong>g responsibilities and for<br />
disabled people.<br />
3.3 <strong>Barriers</strong> <strong>to</strong> access<strong>in</strong>g jobs <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r<br />
How do potential employees then access employment <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r? A<br />
brief summary of barriers with<strong>in</strong> workplace cultures and structures is<br />
useful <strong>to</strong> understand the experiences of under-represented groups.<br />
These <strong>in</strong>clude structural and cultural barriers: freelanc<strong>in</strong>g, word of<br />
mouth recruitment, recruiters operat<strong>in</strong>g through known networks and<br />
high periods of unemployment for film sec<strong>to</strong>r employees.<br />
