recent British films (for example, the <strong>to</strong>p 40, or the <strong>to</strong>p 100) and an<br />

exploration of the cast<strong>in</strong>g of under-represented groups would be a<br />

good start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>to</strong> analyse types of roles, whether <strong>in</strong>cidental or<br />

not, and whether they contribute <strong>to</strong> the cumulative effects of<br />

stereotyp<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

7.5.2 Career pathways<br />

There is no <strong>in</strong>formation on career pathways of under-represented<br />

groups, when compared <strong>to</strong> white, able-bodied, middle-class men’s<br />

pathways. However, there are some <strong>in</strong>dications of how people access<br />

the film sec<strong>to</strong>r and some evidence of mov<strong>in</strong>g up through the sec<strong>to</strong>r,<br />

but this is based on small-scale case studies. There is no research on<br />

how and why certa<strong>in</strong> direc<strong>to</strong>rs, producers and writers from under-<br />

represented groups have been successful.<br />

7.5.3 Occupational data on disabled people, lesbians and gay men<br />

More <strong>in</strong>formation is needed about disabled professionals and gay men<br />

and lesbians <strong>in</strong> the film sec<strong>to</strong>r, particularly their career pathways and<br />

the types of jobs they occupy..<br />

7.5.4 Multiple identities<br />

People have multiple identities based on the <strong>in</strong>tersections of, for<br />

example, gender and age, class and race, gender and ethnicity, age<br />

and disability. We do not, for example, have <strong>in</strong>formation about<br />
