7.6.2 Men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Another project (sponsored by BECTU, British Society of<br />

C<strong>in</strong>ema<strong>to</strong>graphers, PACT, Production Guild, Production Managers<br />

Association and the Writers’ Guild) seeks <strong>to</strong> improve progression <strong>in</strong> the<br />

sec<strong>to</strong>r for m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups by sett<strong>in</strong>g up a film <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g scheme. This follows BECTU’S successful Mov<strong>in</strong>g on Up<br />

project (see 3.5) which aimed <strong>to</strong> facilitate one-<strong>to</strong>-one meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

between m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic professionals and <strong>in</strong>dustry executives. The<br />

long-term aim of these meet<strong>in</strong>gs was for these professionals <strong>to</strong> be<br />

employed or contracted for commissions. Over the two events run <strong>in</strong><br />

2006, more than 1,000 new contacts were set up between nearly 300<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic professionals and 150 executives. Feedback from this<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiative was positive with participants suggest<strong>in</strong>g more events such<br />

as Move on Up and more men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g schemes. The new men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

project will run for 12 months with 25 m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic mentees and 25<br />

men<strong>to</strong>rs (Leadership on <strong>Diversity</strong> Forum 20<strong>07</strong>c).<br />

Men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g is about self-empowerment. In the UK, the men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

black young people by older, white and black adults began as a<br />

community-sourced <strong>in</strong>itiative (Appiah 2001). Lessons from the USA<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g was successful <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g confidence,<br />

encourag<strong>in</strong>g a more proactive desire for improvement and job<br />

development and was important under the right conditions for tackl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternalised racism with<strong>in</strong> organisations. Men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g as an <strong>in</strong>tervention<br />
