7.7.7 Education and careers advice<br />
There is a need for career advisers <strong>in</strong>volved with Skillset <strong>to</strong> take on<br />
board the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of this research review and counsel students about<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g the right courses <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> practical skills for entry <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the film<br />
sec<strong>to</strong>r. Stimulat<strong>in</strong>g younger audiences about film is also important.<br />
There are some <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g UK <strong>Film</strong> Council <strong>in</strong>itiatives such as First<br />
Light (see 3.5) and the encouragement of film clubs after school but<br />
better education about film (not just discussion about ma<strong>in</strong>stream<br />
American films) will be important <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g film culture and help<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>to</strong> create a more film-literate population.<br />
7.7.8 Widen<strong>in</strong>g access <strong>to</strong> the c<strong>in</strong>ema<br />
Certa<strong>in</strong> audiences are under-served when it comes <strong>to</strong> c<strong>in</strong>ema-go<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
for example, people with disabilities, mothers with babies and some<br />
specific orig<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups. These groups can be<br />
encouraged <strong>to</strong> attend the c<strong>in</strong>ema, for example by screen<strong>in</strong>g films<br />
based on the local m<strong>in</strong>ority groups’ languages and cultures. C<strong>in</strong>emas<br />
need <strong>to</strong> know their own catchment areas and consult local people,<br />
particularly disabled users about access, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g people with the<br />
widest range of disabilities. See 3.5 for good practice examples of<br />
widen<strong>in</strong>g access.<br />
The Arts Council set up a ‘New Audiences’ programme <strong>to</strong> widen<br />
participation <strong>in</strong> and access <strong>to</strong> arts events. These new audiences were<br />
def<strong>in</strong>ed by ethnicity, class, <strong>in</strong>come and age. The Arts Council also<br />
