study by the London <strong>Research</strong> Centre shows that the annual <strong>in</strong>come<br />
after tax of m<strong>in</strong>ority communities was £13.4 billion <strong>in</strong> 1997. On a<br />
household-<strong>to</strong>-household basis, Indians, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese and African (such as<br />
Ugandan) Asians all had average <strong>in</strong>comes higher than the white<br />
population. Caribbean orig<strong>in</strong>, Pakistani and Bangladeshi orig<strong>in</strong> peoples<br />
all had lower household <strong>in</strong>comes than whites. (Gidoomal 1999).<br />
There is also a high degree of engagement and support for the arts<br />
and cultural activities amongst m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups (Bridgwood et al<br />
2003). The most widespread activity found <strong>in</strong> this latter survey was<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the c<strong>in</strong>ema, with m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic respondents <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
annual c<strong>in</strong>ema attendance rates of 60-82% for various groups<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g mixed heritage, Asian Black British and Ch<strong>in</strong>ese and other<br />
ethnic groups, compared <strong>to</strong> 56% for white groups (Bridgwood et al<br />
2003).<br />
6.3.3 Meet<strong>in</strong>g the cus<strong>to</strong>mers’ needs and aspirations<br />
Study<strong>in</strong>g chang<strong>in</strong>g consumer demographics is important but, as many<br />
companies have discovered, build<strong>in</strong>g new markets and develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
relationships with the consumer relies heavily on an understand<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
their <strong>in</strong>dividual needs and methods of access. For example, ignor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
or misunderstand<strong>in</strong>g the needs of ethnic m<strong>in</strong>ority consumers can be<br />
very costly. A study of ethnic groups and the British travel <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
showed that people of South Asian orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Bradford were <strong>in</strong>terested<br />
