3: The film workforce<br />
Gett<strong>in</strong>g the right workforce is key <strong>to</strong> susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and develop<strong>in</strong>g any<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. Yet analysis shows that the film <strong>in</strong>dustry does not fully<br />
represent the UK workforce and takes a narrow view of where talent<br />
may be found. Recruitment practices lie at the heart of this issue,<br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g it difficult for certa<strong>in</strong> groups <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> an entry <strong>to</strong> the bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
This may limit the k<strong>in</strong>ds of films we make and the relationship with<br />
diverse audiences.<br />
3. 1 Introduction and scope of chapter<br />
This chapter documents data and research studies on the film<br />
workforce. Key questions considered are:<br />
• What proportions of under-represented groups work <strong>in</strong> the film<br />
sec<strong>to</strong>r, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g production, distribution and exhibition?<br />
• Are those who work <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r evenly distributed across<br />
occupations or is there evidence of occupational segregation?<br />
• How do employees progress <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r?<br />
• What barriers <strong>in</strong> workforce structures and cultures block access<br />
and progression through the sec<strong>to</strong>r?<br />
• Are some groups more likely <strong>to</strong> be funded than others through<br />
regional and national fund<strong>in</strong>g streams?<br />
