certa<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups is very large. These groups can<br />

be targeted <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease audiences for film.<br />

• A diverse workforce can <strong>in</strong>crease organisational effectiveness<br />

and maximise use of talent. Companies that do not maximise<br />

the potential from every group <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly run the risk of<br />

underperform<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Nurtur<strong>in</strong>g and develop<strong>in</strong>g talent will attract more people <strong>to</strong><br />

consider the possibility of work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

• Employee turnover may be reduced because of diversity<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives and this will lead <strong>to</strong> cost sav<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

• S<strong>in</strong>ce the film bus<strong>in</strong>ess now is <strong>in</strong>ternational, skills needed<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude trad<strong>in</strong>g goods and services across borders and <strong>in</strong><br />

multiple languages. A diverse workforce will aid negotiation and<br />

communication, and represent a progressive image <strong>to</strong> the rest of<br />

the world.<br />

• As employers, companies have clear legal obligations <strong>to</strong> treat<br />

staff fairly and equitably.<br />

• Corporate reputations can be damaged by adverse publicity or<br />

discrim<strong>in</strong>ation cases that reach the courts.<br />

What we don’t know<br />

• The l<strong>in</strong>k between diversity and f<strong>in</strong>ancial performance is<br />

unknown, and although studies show a l<strong>in</strong>k between gender<br />

diversity and higher returns on equity, it is difficult <strong>to</strong> establish<br />

causality.<br />
