powerful decision makers <strong>to</strong> change. One of the difficulties of<br />

research on portrayal is that it may <strong>in</strong>volve simply count<strong>in</strong>g people<br />

represent<strong>in</strong>g different groups when they appear <strong>in</strong> films. As well as<br />

explor<strong>in</strong>g numbers of appearances, it is important <strong>to</strong> carry out<br />

qualitative research on portrayal <strong>to</strong> illum<strong>in</strong>ate the cumulative effects of<br />

stereotyp<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

There do not appear <strong>to</strong> be any studies <strong>in</strong> the UK on the way age is<br />

portrayed on screen. A study <strong>in</strong> Sweden on age <strong>in</strong> films <strong>in</strong>dicates that<br />

elderly people are portrayed as eccentric, sexually <strong>in</strong>active or <strong>in</strong>ept,<br />

lively and ‘well preserved’!<br />

Recent research <strong>in</strong> television suggests that the impact on the<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>stream is m<strong>in</strong>imal if only ‘ghet<strong>to</strong>ised’ programmes, or<br />

programmes about groups’ ‘own issues’ are the only ones funded.<br />

7.4 The case for diversity<br />

The Commission for Racial Equality estimates that <strong>in</strong> less than five<br />

years, only 20% of the workforce will be white, able-bodied, male and<br />

under 45. The drive <strong>to</strong> recruit from a broad range of talent rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />

critical for the future of the film sec<strong>to</strong>r, with potential skills shortages<br />

<strong>in</strong> the future.<br />

A diverse workforce can <strong>in</strong>crease organisational effectiveness and<br />

maximise use of talent. There is evidence that heterogeneous <strong>to</strong>p<br />
