Rapid assessment: undertaken following an initial assessment in<br />
a sudden crisis, or as a component of a reassessment. It is based<br />
on a combination of secondary and primary data.<br />
Reference market: key markets that influence the performance<br />
of other markets directly tied to food insecure and vulnerable<br />
populations, and also provides good information and orientation<br />
for food security analysis.<br />
Reference period/year: a period of time used to help explain or<br />
project into the future the performance and likely food security<br />
outcomes of the current period. For example, previous drought<br />
years provide an illustration of the potential progression and<br />
outcome of a current drought year.<br />
Reproductive work: Refers to the work associated with<br />
childbearing, nurture, food preparation, care for the sick, socialization<br />
of the young. In the sexual division of labor, reproductive work is<br />
regarded to be, by and large, the sole responsibility of women and<br />
is largely unpaid and undervalued.<br />
seasonal assessment: the rapid appraisal and standard surveys<br />
of the food security and nutrition situation of the rural and urban<br />
livelihoods in Somalia at the end of each <strong>Gu</strong> long rainy seasons<br />
(April-June); and Deyr short rainy seasons (Oct- Dec).<br />
self-employment: is working for one’s self instead of an employer<br />
and drawing income from a trade or business, operated personally,<br />
for instance, petty trade such as selling of individually collected<br />
bush products in the market to obtain income.<br />
sex: Refers to biological attributes of women and men. It is<br />
natural, determined by birth, and, therefore, generally unchanging<br />
and universal.<br />
sex and age disaggregated data (sAdd): involves disaggregation<br />
of information by age and sex (female and male, girls and boys);<br />
while gender disaggregation involves disaggregation of information<br />
by women and men, as well as girls and boys. In addition,<br />
information that is sex disaggregated is mainly quantitative; while<br />
gender disaggregated information is qualitative in nature.<br />
shocks: an event (flood, drought, conflict, etc.) that results in<br />
diminished food or income access.<br />
situation analysis: analysis of the current food security and<br />
nutrition status of the population and its risks to lives and livelihoods.<br />

markets delineated by FSNAU and FEWSNET in the rural areas/<br />
rural towns.<br />
Terms of Trade (ToT): the rate at which one unit of a commodity<br />
(indicator) can be exchanged for a unit of another commodity and is<br />
typically expressed as price ratio or relative prices of commodities.<br />
ToT indicator is used to measure household purchasing power, the<br />
incentives to market and sale, which ultimately determines food<br />
access. The main indicators monitored include cereal to cereal,<br />
labour to cereals (sorghum, maize, rice) for poor households, local<br />
goat to cereals (for middle households) and camel/cattle to cereals<br />
for better-off wealth groups to helps gauge the relative purchasing<br />
power or food security situation of different wealth groups and<br />
livelihood systems (pastoral, agropastoral and riverine).<br />
To be gendered: This means to address/create or to bring out<br />
issues that affect women, girls, boys and men for attention or<br />
otherwise.<br />
Triple Roles: The term refer to the fact that women tend to work<br />
longer and more fragmented days than men as they are usually<br />
involved in three different gender roles - reproductive, productive<br />
and community work.<br />
Vulnerability: is defined in relation to an event/hazard or shock<br />
capable of triggering an outcome, as opposed to an outcome itself.<br />
Wealth groups: a group of households within the same community<br />
that share similar capacities to exploit the different food and income<br />
options within a particular livelihood zone. In Somalia they are<br />
categorised as follows: poor, middle and better-off.<br />
Zakat: it is the Third Pillar of Islam and often compared to the<br />
system of tithing and alms. It serves principally as the welfare<br />
contribution based on accumulated wealth (giving of one’s<br />
possessions/surplus wealth to the poor and deprived Muslims. It<br />
is obligatory for all who are able to do so and is essential to have<br />
it distributed fairly. It is given annually or seasonally in the form<br />
of own production (crop/livestock), and cash (savings, trade, etc.).<br />
Additional alms are optional.<br />
