GLOSSARY<br />

Freeway.. A controlled access highway as defined in Arizona Revised Statutes, and all rights-<strong>of</strong>-way<br />

associated therewith.<br />

Governmental entity. A political subdivision when carrying out its governmental functions. Grollnd level<br />

The finished grade <strong>of</strong> existing sidewalk; or where there is no sidewalk, the finished grade <strong>of</strong> the<br />

adjacent street curb. Where there is no street curb, six (6) inches above street grade shall be the<br />

established ground leveL<br />

Indirect lighting. A source <strong>of</strong> external illumination located a distance away from the sign, which lights<br />

the sign, but which is itself not visible to persons viewing the sign from any street, sidewalk, or<br />

adjacent property.<br />

Individual letters. A cutout or etched letter or logo which is individually placed on a landscape, screen<br />

wall, building wall, or ground sign.<br />

Internal illumination. A source <strong>of</strong> illumination entirely within the sign which makes the sign content<br />

visible at night by means <strong>of</strong> the light being transmitted through a translucent material, but wherein the<br />

source <strong>of</strong> the illumination is not visible.<br />

Internal indirect lighting. A source <strong>of</strong> illumination entirely within an individual letter, cabinet, or<br />

structure which makes the sign visible at night by means <strong>of</strong> lighting the background upon which the<br />

individual letter is mounted. The letters shall be opaque, and thus will be silhouetted against the<br />

background. The source <strong>of</strong> illumination shall not be visible.<br />

logo. A graphic symbol representing an activity, use or business.<br />

Maintenance. The replacement, repair, or alteration <strong>of</strong> a part or portion <strong>of</strong> individual sign components,<br />

including but not limited to paper, fabric or plastic copy panels; electrical wiring and bulbs; or paint,<br />

stucco, made unusable or damaged by ordinary wear or tear.<br />

Mural An artistic rendering on a building which does not promote a particular business, service or<br />

product.<br />

Occupancy. A purpose for which a building, or part there<strong>of</strong>, is used or intended to be used.<br />

Off-site signage. A temporary sign, which directs attention to a residential subdivision or a housing<br />

product, not related to the uses existing on the parcel upon which the sign is located. On-site signage. An<br />

attached or a free standing sign, which correctly identifies a business, commodity, service, or product<br />

conducted, sold or <strong>of</strong>fered on the same premises as those upon which the sign is located.<br />

Outdoor business area. A business in which all or most <strong>of</strong> the business is conducted or items displayed<br />

in an open area subject to the Zoning <strong>Code</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gilbert</strong>.<br />

Panel, background A two dimensional visual background behind the sign letters and logos which is<br />

visually separated from the mounting upon which the sign letters and logos is placed by the presence <strong>of</strong><br />

a border, different colors, different materials, or other technique <strong>of</strong> visual framing around the letters or<br />

logo.<br />
