GLOSSARY<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> letters, designs, or figures engraved, painted, projected, or fixed on a building or<br />

perimeter wall or other structure, and does not include a background contrasting with the material or<br />

color <strong>of</strong> the building or perimeter wall or other structure, the sign face shall consist <strong>of</strong> the entire<br />

fixed lettering and! or artwork, together with the spacing between the letters, figures or designs.<br />

Sign Freestanding: A non-moveable sign that is not affixed to a building, -wall or fence and is<br />

supported by one (1) or more uprights or poles, and braced in or upon the ground.<br />

Sign, garage sale or yard sale: A temporary sign intended to advertise the location <strong>of</strong> the sale <strong>of</strong><br />

goods from a residential use.<br />

Sign, grand opening: A temporary sign for introduction, promotion or announcement <strong>of</strong> a new<br />

business, store, shopping center or <strong>of</strong>fice, or the announcement, introduction or promotion <strong>of</strong> an<br />

established business or the changing <strong>of</strong> ownership. A business may have a grand opening sign when<br />

it has been dosed to the public for a period <strong>of</strong> thirty (30) days (as indicated on a new <strong>Gilbert</strong><br />

Business License) and is re-opened.<br />

Sign, height The vertical distance measured from the adjacent ground level, or upper surface <strong>of</strong> the<br />

nearest sidewalk, whichever permits the greatest height, to the highest point <strong>of</strong> the sign face <strong>of</strong> said<br />

sign.<br />

Sign, Holyday . A temporary sign, for non-commercial proposes, communicating only holidays<br />

name and event.<br />

Sign identification. A permanent sign identifying name, t)pc <strong>of</strong> business, and/or hours <strong>of</strong> operation,<br />

attached to or painted on a window, door, or building area next to the main entrance, or on a<br />

vehicle door.<br />

Sign, ideological A temporary sign communicating a message or ideas for non-commercial proposes,<br />

and which does not constitute, among others, any <strong>of</strong> the following: construction sign, directional<br />

sign, billboard, on-premise sign, real estate sign, political sign} model complex sign, garage sale<br />

sign or banner.<br />

Sign illegal. Any sign erected in violation <strong>of</strong> this Article.<br />

Sign, landscape wall A freestanding sign architecturally integrated with the building, mounted on a<br />

screen or perimeter wall and having individual letters. The sign is mounted on, or to, a wall, pole or base,<br />

which mayor may not be an attachment or extension <strong>of</strong> a building wall,<br />

Sign, menu: A sign used to inform the public <strong>of</strong> the list <strong>of</strong> dishes} foods or entrees available in a<br />

restaurant and may include the corresponding prices.<br />

Sign, model home complex. A temporary sign indicating the name and location <strong>of</strong> a model home<br />

complex within a project,<br />

Sign, monument: A freestanding permanent sign not greater than eight (8) feet in height.<br />

Sign, non-conforming which does not conform to the provisions <strong>of</strong> this Article at the time <strong>of</strong> its<br />

enactment, which, when first constructed, was legally allowed by-the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gilbert</strong> or the<br />

political subdivision then having the control and regulation over construction <strong>of</strong> signs. Illegal signs<br />

are not non-conforming,<br />

Sign program A specific set <strong>of</strong> design standards established for the purpose <strong>of</strong> unifying a variety<br />
