GLOSSARY<br />

Sign, Changeable Massage. A sign designed to permit change <strong>of</strong> copy mechanically or electronically,<br />

including such signs where the change <strong>of</strong> copy is by remote or automatic means. Such signs which are<br />

changed by electronic means include the following levels <strong>of</strong> operations:<br />

Level (Static) - Signs which include no animation or effects simulating animation 'While the<br />

sign is in operation, and where each message displayed on the sign is displayed for the minimum time frame<br />

specified by the Design Review Board in connection with approval <strong>of</strong> the sign. Changes in sign copy<br />

occur only in connection with the operation <strong>of</strong> turning the sign <strong>of</strong>f and on, within the time frames<br />

specified by the Design Review Board, or instantly.<br />

Level 2 (Fade/Dissolve) - Signs which include static messages changed by means <strong>of</strong> varying<br />

light intensity, limited to message changes where the first message gradually disappears simultaneous to<br />

the gradual appearance <strong>of</strong> the second message (dissolve), or message changes where the first message<br />

gradually disappears before the second message gradually appears (fade), 'With each message appearing<br />

static with no animation effects for the minimum time frame specified by the Design Review Board in<br />

connection with approval <strong>of</strong> the sign.<br />

Level 3 (Travel/Scroll) - Signs which include messages changed by means <strong>of</strong> the appearance <strong>of</strong><br />

movement <strong>of</strong> the graphic elements <strong>of</strong> the sign message across the display surface, limited to messages<br />

appearing to have such movement horizontally (traveling) or vertically (scrolling). Such signs include<br />

static messages, displayed for the minimum time frames specified by the Design Review Board in<br />

connection with approval <strong>of</strong> the sign before the change sequence occurs through traveling or scrolling,<br />

and signs that utilize continuous traveling or scrolling.<br />

Level 4 (Animation) - Signs which include messages changed by means <strong>of</strong> varying light<br />

intensity or the appearance <strong>of</strong> movement <strong>of</strong> the graphic elements <strong>of</strong> the sign message across the display<br />

surface.<br />

Sign, Contractor or Subcontractor. The temporary signs which identify the contractor or<br />

subcontractor engaged in the construction, reconstruction or repair <strong>of</strong> a building or buildings on a<br />

parcel,<br />

Sign, construction A temporary sign erected on the parcel on which construction is taking place, or will<br />

take place within one year, indicating the names <strong>of</strong> the architects, engineers, landscape architects,<br />

contractors or similar artisans, and the owners, financial supports, sponsors, and similar individuals or<br />

firms having a role or interest with respect to the structure or project.<br />

Sign, detached: Any sign supported wholly by the ground or a fence.<br />

Sign, directional: A sign limited to directional messages such as entrance/exit -or direction<br />

instruction to direct on-site traffic circulation. Directional signs intended for residential planned<br />

developments may be on or <strong>of</strong>f premise such as model home complex signs.<br />

Sign, Directory . A sign intended to show the relative locations <strong>of</strong> or direction to the several<br />

commercial or industrial activities within a shopping center or multiple use industrial or business<br />

park, or multiple building residential complex.<br />

Sign, district. A group <strong>of</strong> businesses in a specified area in the <strong>Town</strong>, which have been organized into<br />

a coordinated group for the purpose <strong>of</strong> common signage and signage control.<br />

Sign, face: The surface upon, against or through which the sign copy and! or graphic is displayed<br />

or illustrated, not including: structural supports; monument base; architectural features <strong>of</strong> a building<br />

or monument sign structure; nonstructural or decorative trim. "When a sign only<br />
