Amendments to Definitions in Glossary ~- May 7, 2003<br />

SIGN CODE: The following definitions shall apply when used in the <strong>Gilbert</strong> Sign <strong>Code</strong>:<br />

Accessory Entry Monument. An architectural structure approved by the Design Review Board to<br />

signify and mark the major arrival point to a multiple-tenant commercial or industrial development.<br />

Animation The movement <strong>of</strong> any illumination or the flashing or varying <strong>of</strong> light intensity <strong>of</strong> any<br />

light used in conjunction with a sign such as blinking, traveling, flashing or changing degree <strong>of</strong><br />

intensity <strong>of</strong> any light movement other than burning continuously; or 2), The movement or<br />

the optical illusion <strong>of</strong> movement <strong>of</strong> any part <strong>of</strong> the sign structure, design or pictorial segment, the<br />

automatic changing <strong>of</strong> all or any part <strong>of</strong> the facing <strong>of</strong> a sign; or 3) The movement <strong>of</strong> a sign set in motion by<br />

the atmosphere. Tune and temperature devices are animated signs. Banners and flags are not<br />

animations.<br />

Applicant. A person or entry who applies for a sign permit in accordance with the provisions <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Article.<br />

Awning or Canopy A material or structure mounted on the exterior <strong>of</strong> a building intended to<br />

provide protection from the weather.<br />

Balloon: Any lighter than air or gas filled inflatable object attached by a tether to a fixed place.<br />

Banner: A temporary sign <strong>of</strong> fabric, plastic, paper or other light pliable material not enclosed in a rigid<br />

frame, and which is suspended, mounted, or attached to a building or structure,<br />

Banner; decorative A banner which contains no text.<br />

Banner; public information. A banner which displays graphics and limited text regarding a special<br />

event.<br />

Billboard. A sign or structure, other than temporary signs as defined in this Article, portraying<br />

information or directing attention to a business, activity, commodity service, entertainment, or<br />

communication which is not conducted, sold or <strong>of</strong>fered at the parcel on which the sign or structure<br />

is located, or which does not pertain to the parcel upon which the sign or structure is located.<br />

Building: Any structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or occupancy, which is<br />

enclosed on at least three (3) sides.<br />

Building identification. Tile name <strong>of</strong> a building or <strong>of</strong> a tenant or occupants <strong>of</strong> the building.<br />

Builder/Real Estate sign: A graphic that that provides information about the builder, name <strong>of</strong> the<br />

development, and marketing information <strong>of</strong> the project on which the graphic is located.<br />

Building Official The Director <strong>of</strong> Building and <strong>Code</strong> Compliance.<br />

Building wall: The exterior <strong>of</strong> any side <strong>of</strong> a building.<br />

Business entrance: identification. A sign adjacent to, or on the entrance door <strong>of</strong>, a business containing<br />
