Teacher Notes on Lesson 25
Background . Advertisements and commercials targeted at teenagers influence
teenage attitudes and behaviors. In this lesson students identify the
. words and imagescreated to communicate messages that go beyond
the product and may influence their sexual attitudes.
The goal is to heighten students' awareness and aid them in recognizing
all the messages they encounter. It is for this reason that the
decision-making component of the lesson is the key. Students need
to recognize how media messages influence their personal behavior
and attitudes. In becoming aware of the effects these influences have
on them, students need guidance in clarifying their own thoughts
and feelings with regard to their sense of self with special emphasis
on the sexual messages they receive. Students will then be better
equipped to resist negative influences.
