Background
This lesson focuses on the influential role of media in shaping students'
attitudes regarding sexual behavior.
It is important that students recognize that such messages are conveyed
in a variety of ways, some subtle and implicit, others direct
and explicit.
While students are called upon to identify specific messages in the
media categories presented, this activity constitutes a springboard
for assessing the way in which each message is communicated and
for evaluating the effect of such messages on themselves and their
peers.
When sex is portrayed as a casual social activity enjoyed by young
and old alike without regard to discrimination, assessment of possible
consequences, or risks, or when human persons are presented
primarily as objects of sexual appeal or pleasure, teenage audiences
can be influenced and misdirected when making choices regarding
their own sexuality and sexual behavior. For this reason, the ability
to discern accurately for themselves the meanings and. potential influence
of media messages is the focal point of this lesson.
