According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, <strong>on</strong> 26 November 2012, about 1,000<br />
students protested in G<strong>on</strong>ghe (Chabcha in Tibetan) against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> release <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficial Chinese booklet which reportedly mocked <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tibetan language and<br />
labelled <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> self-immolati<strong>on</strong>s by Tibetans as ―stupidity‖. Security<br />
forces fired warning gunshots and tear gas to disperse <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dem<strong>on</strong>strators. 20<br />
students were reportedly injured, five <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom were hospitalized in critical<br />
c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>. Four students were arrested in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> operati<strong>on</strong>. On 28<br />
November 2012, students took again to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> streets, demanding freedom and<br />
respect for Tibetan language in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> prefecture government centre.<br />
Allegedly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> security forces physically assaulted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> peaceful protestors,<br />
using tear gas and explosive devices. Several students reportedly suffered<br />
from cuts <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir heads and body. Five students were allegedly arrested and<br />

human rights defender. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, Mr. Lobsang<br />
Tenzin was arrested <strong>on</strong> 16 April 1988 in relati<strong>on</strong> to his alleged participati<strong>on</strong><br />
in a pro-independence protest in Lhasa. In 1989, Mr. Tenzin, al<strong>on</strong>g with<br />
four o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r individuals, was charged with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> killing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a police <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficer<br />
during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above menti<strong>on</strong>ed protest, and was sentenced to death with two<br />
years‘ reprieve. In 1991, this sentence was reportedly reduced to life<br />
impris<strong>on</strong>ment, and by 1994, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sentence had been reduced to 18 years. Mr.<br />
Tenzin was allegedly subjected to ill-treatment, including being placed<br />
solitary detenti<strong>on</strong> and physical beatings, <strong>on</strong> at least two occasi<strong>on</strong>s, in 1989<br />
and 1991 respectively. In 2011, sources reported that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tibetan defender,<br />
who has served <str<strong>on</strong>g>23</str<strong>on</strong>g> years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> impris<strong>on</strong>ment to date, was suffering from severe<br />
diabetes which had caused temporary blindness and kidney and back<br />
problems, allegedly as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> poor detenti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
access to adequate medical care.
