trial and due process guarantees. In additi<strong>on</strong>, it is reported that <strong>on</strong> 17<br />
December 2012, a group <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> four unidentified men armed with automatic<br />
weap<strong>on</strong>s attacked Mr. Gunaratne Waninnayaka, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> president <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyers' Associati<strong>on</strong>. On 20 December 2012,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> President <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bar Associati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sri Lanka, Mr.<br />
Wijedasa Rajapakse, was reportedly attacked with gun fire by unknown<br />
pers<strong>on</strong>s. It is alleged that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se attacks are directly related to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> support<br />
voiced by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two lawyers and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bar Associati<strong>on</strong> in favour <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
independence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judiciary, and that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chief Justice in particular.<br />
The impeachment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chief Justice and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reported attacks against<br />
prominent lawyers are allegedly taking place in a broader c<strong>on</strong>text <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> attacks<br />
<strong>on</strong>, threats to and interference in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> independence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> justice system in<br />
Sri Lanka. An urgent appeal expressing serious c<strong>on</strong>cern about reported<br />
attacks <strong>on</strong>, threats to and interference in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> independence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> justice<br />
system in Sri Lanka, including specific attacks against judges, was already<br />
sent <strong>on</strong> 2 November 2012 (see A/<str<strong>on</strong>g>HRC</str<strong>on</strong>g>/22/67, case no LKA 5/2012).<br />
