According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, Ind<strong>on</strong>esia‘s Deputy Attorney<br />
General announced that 10 pris<strong>on</strong>ers c<strong>on</strong>victed in 2012 will be executed in<br />
2013 by firing squads. A significant percentage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 113 death sentences<br />
imposed in 2012 relate to drug-related <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fences, which fall short <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most<br />
serious crimes threshold. Moreover, it is alleged that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trials violated due<br />
process guarantees. According to reports a large number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> people are <strong>on</strong><br />
death row, and am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> so-called ―Bali Nine‖, who<br />
have been in death row since 2005 also for drug related <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fences.<br />

Alleged executi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Sri Lankan domestic worker, who was charged with<br />
murder for killing a baby in her care in 2005 and c<strong>on</strong>victed in 2007. Ms.<br />
Rizana Nafeek was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a previous communicati<strong>on</strong> sent <strong>on</strong> 28 June<br />
2007 by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Special Rapporteur <strong>on</strong> extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary<br />
executi<strong>on</strong>s. The Government <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kingdom <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Saudi Arabia replied in a<br />
letter dated 21 January 2008. On 1 November 2010 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Special Rapporteur<br />
<strong>on</strong> extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executi<strong>on</strong>s sent a follow up<br />
communicati<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kingdom <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Saudi Arabia.<br />
(A/<str<strong>on</strong>g>HRC</str<strong>on</strong>g>/17/28/Add.1). According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new informati<strong>on</strong> received, <strong>on</strong> 25<br />
October 2010, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Supreme Court upheld <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> death sentence. Moreover, it is<br />
reported that <strong>on</strong> 6 January 2013, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa<br />
sent an appeal to King Abdullah requesting a stay <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> executi<strong>on</strong> until a<br />
settlement could be reached between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> baby‘s family and a Saudi<br />
rec<strong>on</strong>ciliati<strong>on</strong> committee. Appeals were repeatedly made by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> parents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Ms. Nafeek to King Abdullah to pard<strong>on</strong> her. On 9 January 2013 Ms. Nafeek<br />
was executed by beheading.<br />

received, <strong>on</strong> 17 December 2012, Mr. Gunaratne Wanninayaka was attacked<br />
outside his home by four unknown individuals carrying assault rifles. Mr.<br />
Wanninayaka managed to escape and enter his house, while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> armed<br />
individuals followed him and attempted unsuccessfully to gain entry to his<br />
residence. Mr. Wanninayaka is a high-pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ile campaigner for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
independence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> judiciary in Sri Lanka and is President <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Colombo<br />
Magistrate's Court Lawyers Associati<strong>on</strong>. He was at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> forefr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a recent<br />
campaign opposing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impeachment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Supreme Court judge.<br />
