Follow-up communicati<strong>on</strong> regarding alleged threats against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> family <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a human<br />

rights defender. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, <strong>on</strong> 12 June 2012, Ms.<br />

Daize Menezes de Souza, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wife <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mr. Alexandre Anders<strong>on</strong> de Souza, noticed<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> guards which had been assigned to guard her home while her husband was<br />

away were absent. Reportedly, she received several threatening ph<strong>on</strong>e calls at this<br />

time and a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unfamiliar cars were stati<strong>on</strong>ed outside <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house. Mr.<br />

Anders<strong>on</strong> de Souza is head <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Associação dos Homens do Mar – AHOMAR<br />

(Associati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Seamen). AHOMAR is an organisati<strong>on</strong> which aims to defend <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

rights <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fisher folk in Rio de Janeiro. Mr. Anders<strong>on</strong> de Souza was granted<br />

protecti<strong>on</strong> measures by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Protecti<strong>on</strong> Programme for human rights<br />

defenders in September 2010 in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wake <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an attempt to kill him and his wife.<br />

They were both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an earlier communicati<strong>on</strong> (see A/<str<strong>on</strong>g>HRC</str<strong>on</strong>g>/18/<str<strong>on</strong>g>51</str<strong>on</strong>g>, case<br />

no BRA 7/2010).<br />

Alleged denial <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> entry to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Republic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Korea <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Philippines Nati<strong>on</strong>al, despite<br />

his valid travel documents. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, <strong>on</strong> 1 May 2012,<br />

Mr. Michel Catuira, former President <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Seoul-Gyenggi-Inche<strong>on</strong> Migrants<br />

Trade Uni<strong>on</strong> (MTU), despite holding a current and valid G-1 Visa, was denied reentry<br />

into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Republic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Korea at Inche<strong>on</strong> Airport, and deported to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Philippines. He has reportedly also experienced a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> legal problems<br />

regarding his work permit. As former president <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> MTU, Mr. Catuira has been<br />

critical <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Korea‘s treatment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> migrant workers, a key<br />

organizer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> protests against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> government, and vocally critical <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Korea has arrested and deported several MTU leaders, and Mr. Catuira‘s<br />

deportati<strong>on</strong> may indicate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> targeted crackdown <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> work and activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
