<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last standing structures c<strong>on</strong>nected to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> former Carlisle Indian Industrial<br />
School, a site <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> deep historical significance to indigenous peoples throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
country. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Carlisle Indian Industrial<br />
School, established in 1879 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first boarding school<br />
to house Native American children outside <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir reservati<strong>on</strong> homelands. After<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school closed in 1918, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> premises were reclaimed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> U.S. Army as part<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Carlisle Barracks, however certain parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school were subsequently<br />
designated as a Nati<strong>on</strong>al Historic Landmark. The farmhouse was excluded from<br />
this designati<strong>on</strong>, despite being actively used for housing and educati<strong>on</strong>al purposes<br />
for indigenous children. Recently, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> U.S. Army War College, located at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Carlisle Barracks, announced its plans to raze <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> farmhouse in August or<br />
September <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2012 in order to make way for four new housing units for its<br />
pers<strong>on</strong>nel. As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> farmhouse was not designated as a Nati<strong>on</strong>al Historic Landmark<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> War College is allegedly taking <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> positi<strong>on</strong> that does not have to c<strong>on</strong>sult with<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relevant state agency, nor with interested indigenous peoples.<br />
Indigenous peoples; Alleged imminent sale <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> land located within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Black Hills, South Dakota,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be a site <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> great spiritual significance to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lakota, Dakota and<br />
Nakota indigenous peoples. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> site known<br />
as Pe‘ Sla is located <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reynolds Prairie in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Black Hills, which has been<br />
owned by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reynolds family since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1870s. Over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> years, members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
owners <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reynolds Prairie had permitted Sioux peoples to enter <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> land and<br />
c<strong>on</strong>duct <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir traditi<strong>on</strong>al cerem<strong>on</strong>ies at Pe‘ Sla, however recently, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> family<br />
recently announced its intenti<strong>on</strong> to sell some land during a land sale aucti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> 25<br />
August 2012. The Lakota, Dakota and Nakota indigenous peoples fear <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sale<br />
may result in restricti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> future access to Pe‘ Sla. There is also c<strong>on</strong>cern over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
state <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> South Dakota‘s reported intenti<strong>on</strong> to pave a gravel road through Pe‘ Sla, in<br />
order to facilitate logging and recreati<strong>on</strong>al activities in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area. Reportedly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Lakota, Dakota and Nakota peoples have begun a fundraising effort in order to<br />
recover this sacred site.<br />
