According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received, artisanal gold mines are found<br />

throughout Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria. The high levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lead<br />

found in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> earth coupled with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rudimentary mining methods have<br />

reportedly resulted in a lead pois<strong>on</strong>ing epidemic am<strong>on</strong>g children. In May<br />

2012, President J<strong>on</strong>athan reportedly pledged approximately US$5 milli<strong>on</strong> to<br />

clean up areas that have been c<strong>on</strong>taminated with lead during artisanal gold<br />

mining operati<strong>on</strong>s, with a specific focus <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bagega area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zamfara<br />

State. Despite <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government‘s pledge, no m<strong>on</strong>ey has allegedly been<br />

released. Importantly, it is alleged that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> remediati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bagega must start<br />

immediately in order to ensure that dec<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> is completed before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rainy seas<strong>on</strong>.<br />

case against him was based <strong>on</strong> a poem which he wrote in 2010, criticizing<br />

Sheikh Tamim Al Thani. Mr. al-Ajami had been reportedly held in solitary<br />

c<strong>on</strong>finement throughout his detenti<strong>on</strong> and his trial has been marred by a<br />

series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> irregularities, including a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> court sessi<strong>on</strong>s held in secret<br />

and lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> access to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trial by Mr. al-Ajami‘s defense lawyer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> choice.<br />
