received, Mr. Ayham Moustafa Ghazzoul, a Syrian citizen, was a human<br />
rights activist from Deir Atteih city. He was a member <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Syrian Center<br />
for Media and Freedom <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Expressi<strong>on</strong> (SCM). On 5 November 2012,<br />
members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pro-government Nati<strong>on</strong>al Students Uni<strong>on</strong> kidnapped Mr.<br />
Ayham Moustafa Ghazzoul at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Damascus University,<br />
toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with two o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r students. Following <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unlawful arrest, Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Students Uni<strong>on</strong> members severely beat Mr. Ayham Moustafa Ghazzoul<br />
before handing him over to Air Force Intelligence in Mezze. It is reported<br />
that while in detenti<strong>on</strong>, Air Force Intelligence members subjected Mr.<br />
Ayham Moustafa Ghazzoul to torture and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r severe forms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cruel,<br />
inhuman, and degrading treatment. Mr. Ayham Moustafa Ghazzoul<br />
reportedly suffered internal bleeding as a direct result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> torture, and<br />
subsequently died <strong>on</strong> 9 November 2012, four days after his arrest.<br />

also prohibit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ―promoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> homosexuality‖; require people, including<br />
doctors, to report any lawbreaker or risk criminal sancti<strong>on</strong>; and compel a<br />
pers<strong>on</strong> charged with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ―aggravated homosexuality‖ to undergo<br />
an HIV test without his/her c<strong>on</strong>sent.
