associati<strong>on</strong>s defending minority rights have been prevented registrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Different cases have been brought to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> attenti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European Court <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong>, which c<strong>on</strong>cluded that Article 11 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> related to<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> right to freedom <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> had been violated. Despite <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ruling <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European Court, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>cerned associati<strong>on</strong>s allegedly c<strong>on</strong>tinue to face<br />
obstacles to registrati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Alleged religious intolerance, arbitrary detenti<strong>on</strong>, summary executi<strong>on</strong>,<br />
torture and unfair trial proceedings. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received,<br />
<strong>on</strong> 19 January 2007, individuals from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Followers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Imam Ahmed El<br />
Hassan El Yamani (al-Mahdi) group were attacked in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Najaf, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />
schools burned down and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir books c<strong>on</strong>fiscated or burnt. On 18 January<br />
2008, a Shi‘a sanctuary al<strong>on</strong>g with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r residences and mosques was<br />
attacked by army and police forces in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Basra and Nassiriya,<br />
which reportedly resulted in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> summary executi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> at least 18 unarmed<br />
members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Followers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Imam Ahmed El Hassan El Yamani and 378<br />
arrests. Detainees were purportedly subjected to torture and ill-treatment<br />
and detained for extended periods waiting for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir trials. All but 45 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
detainees were eventually released. On 26 February 2009, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Appeal<br />
Criminal Court <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zi Kar Governorate c<strong>on</strong>victed 28 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> accused to death<br />
sentences (pending imminent executi<strong>on</strong>), including Najah Taleb Salman,<br />
Ghanem Archij Salem, Rahim Bashi Awad, Sabah Nuri Dagher, Mahmoud<br />
Razzak Mohamed, Ali Attia Rahima, Haider Kadhem Doeij, Hussein Sharif<br />
Mazuk, Abdullah Naim Delli, Mohamed Sharif Mazuk, Mohamed Jawad<br />
Hussein, Aqeel Kassem Mohamed, Hassan Charif Marzuk, Hussein Abd El<br />
