Alleged sale <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> children for forced labour in mines. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong><br />

received, an estimated 70,000 b<strong>on</strong>ded child labourers from Nepal and Bangladesh<br />

work at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> so-called "rat mines" <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya State, India. In most<br />

cases, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> children are allegedly purchased by middlemen or abducted or sold by<br />

gangs in Nepal and Bangladesh to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mining mafia in Meghalaya. The working<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mines are allegedly hazardous, unhygienic, cruel and inhuman.<br />

Deaths <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> children due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unsafe working c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s are reportedly comm<strong>on</strong>,<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten remain unreported. The children reportedly live in huts made with plastic<br />

sheets and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> safe drinking water and proper sewage system.<br />

Allegedly, girls are also <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten bought by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mine owners and subject to sexual<br />

exploitati<strong>on</strong>. There is also informati<strong>on</strong> suggesting that some children are trafficked<br />

fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mines to o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r places for sexual exploitati<strong>on</strong>. Reportedly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is<br />

a lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> interventi<strong>on</strong>s in this matter by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> State Government.<br />

Alleged takeover <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hospital by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> army. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> received,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Army <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bahrain commandeered and occupied Salmaniya hospital, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main<br />

hospital in Manama, and blocked access to it. Reportedly, entry and exit from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

building had been prohibited, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> electricity cut <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f. Additi<strong>on</strong>al reports have<br />

been received that security forces had attacked medical workers and occupied<br />

smaller state and private medical centres.<br />
