prominent Imam and supporter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> promoti<strong>on</strong> and protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> human<br />
rights in Gambia, was arrested close to his home by two men in civilian<br />
clo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, who reportedly identified <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves as <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Intelligence Agency (NIA). The <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers reportedly informed Imam Baba<br />
Leigh that he was being taken to NIA headquarters for questi<strong>on</strong>ing, without<br />
providing additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong>. Imam Baba Leigh was reportedly detained<br />
in an unknown locati<strong>on</strong> by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> NIA and not provided with access to a<br />
lawyer and to family members. It is fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r reported that no charges had<br />
been presented. Sources also indicate that <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evening <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his arrest, Imam<br />
Baba Leigh had delivered a serm<strong>on</strong> at Kanifing East Mosque, during which<br />
he expressed c<strong>on</strong>cern at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> state executi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nine pris<strong>on</strong>ers in August<br />
2012, and at o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r reported killings in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country.<br />

Alleged torture in custody <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a United States citizen. According to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
informati<strong>on</strong> received, Mr. Vincent Wu was arrested by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chinese Public<br />
Security Department in Guangzhou city, Guangd<strong>on</strong>g province, and detained<br />
in Guangd<strong>on</strong>g Detenti<strong>on</strong> Center, under suspici<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> involvement in a<br />
criminal case. Mr. Wu reportedly suffered successive acts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> torture by<br />
members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chinese Public Security Department during custody.<br />
Fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rmore it is reported that Chinese authorities took away Mr. Wu‘s<br />
passport, allegedly in an attempt to hide any evidence that he is a US<br />
citizen. It is reported that nei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficials <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> American C<strong>on</strong>sulate nor<br />
Mr. Wu‘s family were allowed access to him. It is also reported that Mr.<br />
Wu‘s lawyer was <strong>on</strong>ly able to visit him twice.<br />
