assessed, monitored and re-ordered accordingly.<br />

• Revisit the activities listed in the Interpandemic and <strong>Pandemic</strong> Alert<br />

Periods.<br />

• Contact the local registrar on the status for staffing to handle the demand<br />

of increased filing of death certificates<br />

• No bodies are to leave an Article 28 facility without having a signed<br />

death certificate.<br />

• Contact casket companies to provide suitable containers.<br />

• Contact persons contracted to dig mass grave.<br />

Local Health Departments:<br />

• Update providers regularly as the influenza pandemic unfolds.<br />

• Refrigeration storage needs to be assessed per county and utilized as<br />

appropriate.<br />

• Revisit the activities listed in Interpandemic and <strong>Pandemic</strong> Alert<br />

Periods.<br />

• Communicate with the local funeral firms to assess the status of their<br />

current surge capacity.<br />

• Based on the number of deaths, the surge capacity of funeral homes and<br />

cemeteries, and the availability of persons to oversee dispositions, the<br />

appropriate county official may direct mass dispositions.<br />

• Collaborate with the County Medical Examiner and local Emergency<br />

Manager to instruct and inform hospitals on movement of deceased in<br />

the situation of mass fatality.<br />

State Health Department:<br />

• Communicate with the local funeral firms to assess the status of their<br />

current surge capacity.<br />

• Contact the local registrars, coroners and medical examiners on the<br />

status of emergency staffing plans to handle the mass mortality and<br />

absenteeism associated with <strong>Pandemic</strong> <strong>Influenza</strong>.<br />

• Consult with cemeteries as to the current status of the surge capacity.<br />

• Based on the number of deaths, implement streamlined procedures/form<br />

associated with filing death certificates in 57 counties outside of New<br />

York City.<br />

• Coordinate actions with New York City Vital Statistics.<br />
