Section 7: Antiviral Medication Procurement, Distribution, and Use<br />

Local Health Departments:<br />

• Investigate and report all antiviral adverse events.<br />

• Engage in active surveillance of antiviral adverse events.<br />

• Distribute MedWatch forms to providers and patients as needed.<br />

• Work with NYSDOH to monitor resistance and effectiveness of antivirals<br />

• Encourage clinicians to obtain specimens from patients who develop<br />

severe disease while receiving treatment of prophylaxis.<br />

• Provide protocols and information to health care providers and<br />

encouraging hospitals to download MedWatch forms for distribution to<br />

patients.<br />

Healthcare Partners:<br />

• Monitor all staff taking antivirals for adverse events.<br />

• Report all adverse events to LHD.<br />

• Participate with the LHD to investigate all adverse events.<br />

• Obtain viral specimens from patients who develop severe disease while<br />

receiving treatment or prophylaxis and submit to Wadsworth or CDC<br />

according to established protocol.<br />

• Provide medical consultation for those in the community that have<br />

concerns about potential adverse events.<br />

5. Data Collection<br />

Interpandemic and <strong>Pandemic</strong> Alert Periods<br />

State Health Department:<br />

• Work with DHHS, LHDs, and HCPs to implement guidance on<br />

specifications for tracking distribution, effectiveness, and safety of<br />

antivirals.<br />

• Work with the Data Management Workgroup to develop the ability to<br />

collect important antiviral data.<br />

• Provide information to health professionals and the public on issues<br />

related to availability and use of antiviral drugs during an influenza<br />

pandemic.<br />

• <strong>Plan</strong> for the use of an IND protocol which would require the collection of<br />

detailed information on inventory control, participants, consent, and<br />

adverse events.<br />

Local Health Departments:<br />

• <strong>Plan</strong> for the participation in the data collection system established by the<br />

NYSDOH.<br />

• Educate staff about their roles in this system.<br />
