IRVINE SETTLEMENT.<br />
A Scotch settlement in the township of Nichol, a short distance west from Elora.<br />
Inhabitants principally from Aberdeen.<br />

ISTHMUS, THE, or NEWBORO'.<br />
A small Settlement in the township of North Crosby, on the Rideau Canal,<br />
twenty miles from Oliver's ferry, and forty-two from Kingston. It contains<br />
about eighty inhabitants, four stores, one tavern, two shoemakers, one blacksmith.<br />
JAMESTOWN.<br />
A small Settlement near the south-east corner of the township of Yannonth,<br />
on Catfish Creek, about one mile from Lake Erie, contains a grist and saw mill,<br />
distillery, and about ten houses.<br />

JEDBURGH.<br />
A small Settlement in the township of Dumfries, situated on Cedar Creek, a<br />
branch of the Nilh, about a quarter of a mile from Ayr. It contains about<br />
thirty inhabitants, one grist and saw mill, one distillery, one blacksmith.<br />
JOHNSTOWN DISTRICT.<br />
Consists of the Counties of Leeds and Grenville ; it is bounded on the southeast<br />
by the River St. Lawrence, and is watered besides by the Rideau River and<br />
lakes ;<br />
and several other lakes, some of which are very large, are scattered over<br />
the district. The Rideau Canal runs througli the north and west of the district.<br />
There is a considerable quantity of good land in the district, although a<br />
large portion of that bordering on the canal and lakes is poor and rocky.<br />
Altogether the District is well settled, and contains some good farms. The<br />
inhabitants nre principally Scotch and Irish. Brockville, the district toAvn, is<br />
handsomely situated, and contains some good st(me buildings. Thirteen thousand<br />
three hundred and fifty-five acres of Crown lands are open for sale in the<br />
Johnstown District, at 8.«. c'y, per acre, to jjurchase any of which application<br />
must be made to the Crown Lands Agent at Prescott.<br />
Population in 1842, 36,768, since when it has probably increased one-fifth.<br />
