HARWICH.<br />

A Township in the county of Kent, iu the Western District ; hounded on the<br />

north-west by the River Thames ; on the south-west by the townsliip of<br />

Raleigh ; on the south by Lake Erie ; and on the north-east by the township of<br />

Howard. In Harwich 3:^,84.5 acres are taken up, of which 4,942 are under cultivation.<br />

Soil extremely fertile, consisting of reddish loam, with intervening ridges<br />

of sandy or gravelly loam. Timber—white oak, bhick wahiut, maple, beech,<br />

hickory, bass-wood. &c. &c. ; and on the lake shore may be found cedai", both<br />

white and red. McGregor's creek runs across the township to its northwestern<br />

corner, where it enters the Thames. This township is well settled, containing<br />

189S inhabitants. Harwich contains a mixed population. The Canada<br />

Company possess 2,600 acres in Harwich. At the southern extremity of this<br />

township is the Rond Eau, to which harbour an excellent road has latelj' been<br />

formed fi'om Chatham. Amount of ratable property in the township £25,208.<br />

The town of Chatham is partly situated in Harwich.<br />

HASTINGS.<br />

A County forming the Victoria District ; it <strong>com</strong>prises the following townships—<br />

Elzevir, Grimsthorp, Hungerford, Huntingdon, Lake, Marmora, Madoc,<br />

Rawdon, Sydney, Tudor, Thurlow, and Tyendenaga. It returns a member to<br />

the House of Assembly.<br />

HATSFIELD.<br />

A village in the township of Plautagenet four miles south of the Ottawa<br />

contains about eighty inhabitants ;<br />

grist and saw mill, one store, two taverns.<br />

HAWKESBURY EAST.<br />

A Township in the Ottawa District; is bounded on the east bj' Lower Canada;<br />

on the north by the Ottawa River; on the west by Hawkesbury West; and on<br />

the south by Lochiel. In East Hawkesbury 24,0.37 acres are taken up. Four<br />

thousand seven hundred and forty-six of which are under cultivation. The land<br />

in this township, particularly that bordering on the Ottawa, is mostly poor and<br />

cold, and much of it is wet. There is a settlement in the south of the townshipi,<br />

called " East Hawkesbury Mills," containing grist, saw and oatmeal mills.<br />

There are four grist and seven saw mills in the township. One thousand two<br />

hundred and ninety-six acres of Crown lauds in Hawkesbui'y East are open<br />

for sale, at 8.«. currency per acre.<br />

HAWKESRURY, WEST.<br />

A township in the Ottawa District; is bounded on the east by East Hawkesbury;<br />

on the north by the (,)ttawa; on the west by Longueil and Caledonia;<br />

and on the south by J.,ochiel. In West Hawkesbury, 23,459 acres are taken up,<br />

7,201 of which are under cultivation. The land of this township is similar to<br />

that of East Hawkesbury. JIawkesbury village is situated in the north of the<br />

township; and Hawkesbury Mills, the largest saw'ing establishment in Canada<br />

West, is a short distance from the village. Two hundred and fifty acres of<br />

Crown lands are open for sale in West Hawkesbury, at 8,v. per acre. There ai'e<br />

two grist and eight saw mills, and one distillery iu the township.<br />
