SPRINGFIELD.<br />
A Village in the tovrnship of Toronto, on Duudas Street, nineteen mile west<br />
from Toronto, situated on the River Credit in the midst of some very fine<br />
scenerj'. It contains about 140 inhabitants, and possesses an Episcopal church.<br />
There are in the village two taverns, one store, one chair factory, one tailor, and<br />
one shoemaker.<br />
Post Office, post every day.<br />
STAG ISLAND, or ISLE AUX CERFS.<br />
An Island in the River St. Clair, five miles below Port Sarnia; contains about<br />
150 acres, of which about 50 acres are fit for cultivation, the remainder being<br />
mai'sh. It belongs to the Indians, but is leased to one or two farmers.<br />
STAMFORD.<br />
A Township in the Niagara District ; is bounded on the east by the Niagara<br />
River ; on the north by the township of Niagara ; on the west by Thorold<br />
and on the south by Crowland and Wiilougliby. In Stamford 22,049 acres are<br />
taken up, 11, .303 of which are under cultivation. This is an old and well-settled<br />
township, containing good laud, and numerous beautifully situated farms. Tlie<br />
Falls of Niagara are opposite this township, and the Whirlpool is also in it.<br />
The village of Chippewa is situated partly in Stamford, and partly in the<br />
adjoining township of Wiilougliby, which is separated from Stamford by the<br />
Wellaud River ; and the village of Drummondville is also in the township,<br />
situated near the falls. There are thi-ee grist mills in the township.<br />
Population in 1841. 2,636, who are a mixture of <strong>Canadian</strong>s, English, Irish,<br />
Scotch, and Americans.<br />

STANLEY.<br />
A Township in the Huron District ; is bounded on the north by the River<br />
Bayfield; on the west by Lake Huron; on the south by the township of Hay ;<br />
and on the east by Tuckersmith. The soil of this township is good, with the<br />
exception of the land bordering on the lake, which is poor. In Stanley there<br />
are leased or sold 16,516 acres, of which 1197 are under cultivation. The village<br />
of Bayfield is in this toMuship, at the entrance of the river into Lake Huron.<br />
Population, 737.<br />
Ratable property in the township, £6130. 18s.<br />
STEPHEN.<br />
A Township in the Huron District; is bounded on the north by the township<br />
of Hay; on the west by Lake Huron and the Sable River; on the south by<br />
McGillivray; and on the east by Usborne and Eiddulph. The land bordering<br />
on the lake, for about a mile in length, is sandy and unfit for cultivation; but<br />
most of the rest of the township is good. Stephen contains 41,603 acres, 4,150<br />
of which are leased or sold; of which 520 acres are under cultivation.<br />
Population of Stephen, 213.<br />

STONEBRIDGE, or PETERSBURGH.<br />
A Village in the township of Humberstone, situated on the feeder of tlie<br />
Wdland Canal, one mile and a half from ]>ake Erie. It is supported almost<br />
entirely by the works on the CanaL A detachment of the Coloured Company<br />

quartered here.<br />
Population about 200, exclusive of the laboures on the canal.<br />
