THOROLD.<br />
A Township in the Niajrara District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />
of Stamford; on the north by Grantham and a small portion of Louth; on the<br />
west by Pelham; and on the south by Crowland. In Thorold 23,389 acres are<br />
taken up, U,(i7H of which are under cultivation. Thi- Welland River divides<br />
the townsliip from Crowland. This is one of the best settled townships in the<br />
Niagara District, containing a great number of excellent, well cleared farms.<br />
Most of the land is rolling. 'I'lie Welland Canal is carried tiirough tiie township,<br />
and has added greatly to its prosperity. Tlie villages of 'I'horold, Fort<br />
Ilobinson, AUanburg, and St. Johns are situated in the township; and there are<br />
eight grist and five saw mills in the township.<br />
Population in 1841, 2284; who are a mixture of <strong>Canadian</strong>s, Americans, Irish,<br />
Scotch, English, and Welsh.<br />

THOROLD.<br />
A Village in the township of Thorold, situated on the summit of the mountain,<br />
four miles from St. Catharines. It was <strong>com</strong>menced in tlie year 1826, and<br />
now contains about 1000 inhabitants. The Welland Canal rims close past the<br />
village. There are three churches and chapels in Thorold, viz., Episcopal,<br />
Catholic, and Methodist.<br />
Post Office, post three times a-week.<br />
Profe.ssiotis and Trades.—Two physicians and surgeons, two grist mills, (one<br />
do. in progress), one cement mill, one brewery, nine stores, seven taverns, one<br />
tannery, one saddler, one chemist and druggist, three waggon makers, three<br />
blacksmiths, two painters, two cabinet makers, two tinsmiths, eight shoemakers,<br />
one baker, hatter, two barbers, three tailors, one ladies' school.<br />
THURLOW.<br />
A Township in the Victoria District; is bounded on the east by the to-wnship<br />
of Tyendenaga; on the north by Huntingdon; on the west by Sidney; and on<br />
tlie south by the Bay of Quinte. In 'I'hnrlow 46,9S4 acres are taken up, 18,254<br />
of which are under cultivation. The River Moira enters the township at its<br />
north-east corner, passes through the township to its south-west corner, where<br />
it enters the Bay of Quinte. This township is well settled, principally by U. E.<br />
Loyalists and their descendants, who have very good farms. The town of<br />
Belleville is situated in the soiith-west corner of the township, on the Bay of<br />
Quinte. There are eight grist and fifteen saw mills in Thurlow.<br />
Population in 1841! (exclusive of Belleville), 2,649.<br />

TILBURY EAST.<br />
A Township in the Western District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />
township of Raleigh; on the north by the River Thames; on the west by Tilbury<br />
West ; and on the south by Romney—the south-east corner of the township<br />
having a fn ntage on Lake Erie. In East Tilbur)' 16.999 acres are taken<br />
up, 1,31.5 of which are under cultivaticm. A low, wet prairie or marsh, about<br />
three miles in breadth, which is used extensively for grazing, borders on the<br />
Tliames. Two or three branches of the Thames run through the township<br />
There is a Catholic church in the township, situated on the Thames, about<br />
eleven miles below Chatham. Three thousand nine hundred acres of Crown<br />
lands are open for sale in the township, at S.v. currency per acre; and about<br />
8000 acres are possessed by the Canada Company.<br />
Population in 1844. .'J40; nearly half of whom are French <strong>Canadian</strong>s.<br />
