The banks of the St. Lawrence, above Montreal, are generally rather low,<br />
the greater portion of them have been long settled, and bear the aspect of a<br />
country which has been long reclaimed from its primeval wildness.<br />
From its <strong>com</strong>mencement, till it reaches the St. Regis settlement, the St.<br />
Lawrence sepai'ates Upper Canada from the United States; afterwards it divides<br />
Upper from Lower Canada ; and it forms the southern boundary of the Johnstown<br />
and the Eastern districts.<br />
The principal towns and villages on the St. Lawrence, are Brockville, the<br />
district town of the Johnstown District: Cornwall, the district town of the<br />
Eastern District; Prescott, in the township of Augusta; Gananoque, in Leeds;<br />
and Milleroches, in Cornwall.<br />
ST. JOSEPH ISLE.<br />
An Island in the north-west of Lake Hui'on.<br />
ST. MARY'S.<br />
A Village in the township of Blanshard, situated at the falls of the north<br />
branch of the River Thames, twelve miles from Stratford, and twenty-five miles<br />
nortti-west from Ingcrsol. It was laid out in 1844, and contains about 120 inhabitants.<br />
There is an excellent limestone quarry close to the village.<br />
PniJ'e.isions (ind Trades.—One grist mill, one saw do., one pliysician and surgeon,<br />
two asheries, tliree stores, one tavern, one shoemaker, one tailor, one<br />
cooper, one blacksmith.<br />

STRATFORD.<br />
A Village on the Huron Road, at the corners of the townships of Ellice,<br />
North and South Easthope, and Downie. It is forty-five miles from Goderich.<br />
The River Avon, a braiieh of the Thames, runs through the village.<br />
Stratford contains about 200 inhabitants.<br />
Post Office, post three times a-week.<br />
Professions and Trades.—Two physicians and surgeons, one grist and saw<br />
mill, one tannery, three stores, one brewery, one distillery, one ashery, two<br />
taverns, two blacksmiths, one saddler, two wlieelwrights, three shoemakers, tMo<br />
tailors.<br />
ST. THOM.AS.<br />
A large Village in the township of Yarmouth, beautifully situated on Kettle<br />
Creek, seventeen miles from London, and nine miles Irom Port Stanley. It is<br />
surrounded by a succession of hill and dale, and in the midst of a fine, well<br />
cultivated country. It was laid out about thirty years since, and now contains<br />
between 7 and 800 inhabitants. It is a place of considerable business. The<br />
plank road from LoTulon to Port Stanley runs through the village, north and<br />
st)uth. and the Talbot Road, east and west. Stages from London to Port<br />
Stanley pass through the village daily. A weekly newspaper is published here,
