PEEL.<br />
A Township in the Wellington District; is hounded on the north-east hy the<br />
township of (Jarafraxa; on tlie north-west by Maryhoroiigh; on the south-west<br />
by Wellesley; and on the south-east by Woolwieh and Nieiioi. This township<br />
forms part of what was fornierl}' called " Queen's IJusli;" it has not long been<br />
open for settlement, and no return has yet been made I'rom it. It is said to<br />
contain about 1000 inhabitants.<br />
PELHAM.<br />
A Township in the Niagara District; is hounded on the east by the township<br />
i)f Tliorold; on the north by Louth; on the west by Gainsborough and a small<br />
portion of Clinton; and on the south by Wainfleet. In Pelhaiu 2(>,8'J(J acres<br />
are taken up, ll,4:i4 of which are under cultivation. The Chippewa, or Welland<br />
River, forms the south boundary of the township; and a good mill stream<br />
flows through the north-east of the township. Pelhaiu is an old-settled township,<br />
and contains good farms and excellent orchards. Timber — pine, intermixed<br />
with hardwood. Tliere are three grist and ten saw mills in tlie township.<br />
Population in 1842, 1,522; who are principally <strong>Canadian</strong>s and Americans.<br />
Ratable property in the township, £34,000.<br />
PELE, POINT.<br />
A Point of Land, part of the township of Mersea, which runs out into Lake<br />
Erie.<br />
PEMBROKE.<br />
A Township in the Bathurst District; is bounded on the north and north-west<br />
hy the Ottawa River; on the west by unsurveyed lands; and on the south by<br />
Westmeatli and Stafford. This township and Stafford, being as yet but little settled,<br />
are assessed together. In the two townships 1 1,20.") acres are taken up, 1,658<br />
of whicli are under cultivation. Farming produce in these nortliern townships<br />
usually <strong>com</strong>mands a liigh price, in con.>;equence of the exi)ense of carriage so<br />
far up the Ottawa; there being a great demand for produce of all kinds, particularly<br />
for liay and oats, for the use of the lumberers on the river. On the<br />
whole, however, where the winter is so long, and stock of all kinds must necessarily<br />
reipiire so much feeding, farming cannot be very profitable, even with<br />
the high prices the produce brings. In Pembroke 1,900 acres of Crown lands<br />
are open for sale, at Ss. currency per acre. There are one grist and two saw<br />
mills in the township.<br />

PEMBROKE.<br />
A Village in the north-west of the township of Pembroke, situated on the<br />
Ottawa River, at the mouth of the Muskrat River! It is supported entirely by<br />
the lumber trade. There is as yet no road to the settlement pasable for waggons,<br />
but one has been lately surveyed. All goods intended for the settlement<br />
are conveyed up the Ottawa. Pembroke contains about 250 inhabitants, one<br />
MethodistiChurch. one physician and surgeon, one grist and saw mill, one waggon<br />
maker, five stores, six taverns, and two blacksmiths.<br />

PENETANGUISHENE.<br />
A Village in the township of Tiny, beautifully situated on Penetanguishene<br />
Bay, forty miles from Barrie. Penetanguishene was <strong>com</strong>menced in the year<br />
ISIS, in consequence of the government having formed a naval and military<br />
establishment on tlie bay, in the township of Tay, two and a half miles off;
