HALDIMAND.<br />

A County in the Niagara District; it <strong>com</strong>prises the townships of Canboro,<br />

Cayuga, Dunn, Moulton, Shcrbrooke, and for the pui'poses of representation in<br />

the Legislative Assembly, and of .registration of titles only, the townshipl of<br />

Seneca, Oneida, Rainham and Walpole. It retui-ns a member to the House of<br />

Assembly.<br />

HALDIMAND.<br />

A Township in the Newcastle District; is bounded on the east by the town<br />

ships of Cramahe and Percy; on the north by Alnwick; on the west by Hamilton;<br />

and on the south by Lake Ontario. In Haldimaud 44,157 acres are taken<br />

up, 17,744 of which are under cultivation. The village of Grafton is situated<br />

in the south of the township, on the eastern road. The north of the township<br />

consists of oak plains ; the centre and south are good land, timber principally<br />

hardwood, intermixed with large pine. There are three grist and eleven sawmills<br />

in the township. In Haldimand 300 acres of Crown lands are open for sale,<br />

at 8uV. currency per acre.<br />

HALDIMAND.<br />

A settlement in the township of Dunn; situated on the Grand River, about<br />

one quarter of a mile from Dunnville. It contains about sixty inhabitants: one<br />

grist-mill; two saw mills; two taverns.<br />

HALLO WELL.<br />

A Township in the Prince Edward District; is bounded on the north by<br />

Sopaiasbnrgh and the Bay of Qulute; on the east by Marysburgh: on the south<br />

by Athol; and on the west by Lake Ontario, and the township of Hillier.<br />

Hallowell, contains 38,625 acres; 18,746 of which are under cultivation. A<br />

large bay called " West Lake," having several small islands in it, penetrates into<br />

this township; it is connected with Lake Ontario by a very short narrow channel.<br />

The east portion of " West Lake" is marshy. The town of Picton is in<br />

thii township. Tiiere ai'e four grist and ten saw-mills in the township.<br />

Population in 1842 (not including the town of Picton), 2322.<br />

Ratable property in the township, £63,889.<br />

II ALTON.<br />

A County in the Gore District; <strong>com</strong>prises the townships of Beverly, Esquesing,<br />

East Eiamboro', West Flauiboro', Nassagaweya, Nelson, and Trafalgar; and for<br />

all purposes, except that of representation in the Legislative Assembly, the<br />

township of Dumfries; and for the purpo-se of representation in the Legislative<br />

Assembly only, the township of Erin. It returns a member to the House of<br />

Assemb v-<br />

A Village in tbe township of Wilmot; two miles from llaysville, and twentytwo<br />

miles from CmII; situated on Siuitli's Crcclc. It was laid out in 1837, and<br />

cODtaiuB about 3UU inhabitants: two churches, Methodist.
