Professions and Trades.—One physician and surgeon, one grist mill, carding<br />
machine and fulling mill, one distillery, one tannery, four stores, two taverns,<br />
9ne chair maker, one waggon maker, one blacksmith, one tailor, ijne shoemaker.<br />
NORWOOD, OR KEELER'S MILLS.<br />
A Village in the east of the township of Asphodel, ten miles south-east from<br />
Warsaw, and six miles north from the Ti-ent River. It contains about 120<br />
inhabitants. There are some fine lime-stone quan-ies in the neighbourhood.<br />
In Norwood is a Congregational chapel; also a grist and saw mill, tannery^,<br />
three stores, one tavern, two blacksmiths.<br />
Post Office, post three times a-week.<br />
NORTHUMBERLAND.<br />
A County in the Newcastle District—<strong>com</strong>prises the townships of Alnwick,.<br />
Cramahe, Hamilton, Haldimand, South JNIonaghan, Murray, Percy and Seymour.<br />
It returns a member to the House of Assembly.<br />
NOTTAWASAGA.<br />
A Township in the Simcoc District; is bounded on the north by Nottawasaga.<br />
Bay; on the west by the townships of CoUingwood and Ospry; on the south by<br />
Mulmur and a small portion of Melancthon; and on the east by Sunnidale.<br />
In Nottawasaga 18,850 acres are taken up, 1539 of which are under cultivation.<br />
The township is well watered by numerous small streams, and a large portion of<br />
the township is good land. A village, called Hurontario, has been lately started<br />
on the bay, where there are a grist and saw mill, and store. There are large<br />
quantities of fine cedar on the bay. There is a quarry in the township, of the<br />
stone of which excellent grind-stones are manufactured; lime-stone also is<br />
abundant.<br />
In Nottaw^asaga, there are 7900 acres of Crown lands open for sale<br />
at 8*. currency per acre. There are three grist and three saw mills in the<br />
township.<br />
Population in 1842, 420; who are principally Scotch.<br />
Ratable property in the township, £7877.<br />
NOTTAWASAGA BAY.<br />
A large Bay, situated in the south of the Georgian Bay. It receives the<br />
Nottawasaga River.<br />
NOTTAWASAGA RIVER.<br />
A River; different branches of which take their rise in the high lands in the<br />
townships of Albion, Teeumseth, Mono, Melancthon, Mulmur, and Innisfil;<br />
and arc spread besides over the townships of Adjala, West Gwillimbury, Essa,<br />
Tossorontio, Vespra, Flos, and Sunnidale; in which latter township the river<br />
enters the Nottawasaga Bay. The Nottawasaga River is not navigable for<br />
large vessels. There is a great deal of excellent land, and fine timber on its<br />
banks.<br />
OAKLAND.<br />
A Township in the Brock District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />
township of Brantford; on the west by Burford ; and on the south by Townsend.<br />
In Oakland 9,182 acres are taken up, 5,850 of which are under cultivation.<br />
This is a small township; the greater part of it is under culiivation. A large<br />
cedar swamp extends from the townshij) of Bi-autford into the north-west of<br />
Oakland, and reaches nearly to the centre of the township. The village of<br />
Scotland is situated in the Avest of the townsliip, close to the town-line between<br />
Oakland and Burford ;<br />
and the village of Oakland a little south of the centre of<br />
thi township. There are one grist and two saw mills in the township.<br />
Population in 1842, 4{)4 , who arc principally of Scotch descent.<br />
