Mississaga, which is a little below the entrance of the river, a <strong>com</strong>pany of rWies,<br />

and a few artillerymen are stationed. Tlie jail and court-house are situated<br />

about one mile south-west from the town, and the barracks are about midway<br />

between the town and jail. A new town-hall and court-house are intended to<br />

be erected by the ( 'orporation durinj;- the ])resent season. 1'iiere are in the town<br />

a fire ci)m])aiiy, with two incines, and a hook and ladder c^imiianv. Churches<br />

and chapels five, viz.. Episcopal (stone), Presbyterian (brick). Catholic, Methodist,<br />

and IJaptist. Two newspapers are published weekly, the " Niagara Chronicle,'"<br />

and " Argus."<br />

Steamboats run daily, as long as the weather will allow of it, from Toronto<br />

to Niagara and Queenston ; and during the summer, boats run also from Hamilton<br />

to Niagara. The Niagara River, from the swiftness of its current, being<br />

generally free from ice up to Queeuston, except at the breaking up of the frost<br />

in the spring, when it occasionally be<strong>com</strong>es blocked up with ix;e carried down<br />

the stream JVom above.<br />

The Niagara Harbour and Dock Company were incorporated in the year<br />

1830, and have sliip-yards at Niagara and Chippewa. The machinery belonging<br />

to the establishment is of a very perfect description, worked by a steamengine,<br />

and adapted for work of a superior kind, as the vessels turned out by<br />

the Com])any sufficiently prove; one of which, the steamboat "London," which<br />

<strong>com</strong>menced running iu the spring of 1845, is the fiistest boat on the upper lakes,<br />

and a very beautiful model. The Company usually employ about 150 hands;<br />

and, when particularly busj', have employed as many as 350. There is also on<br />

the premises a marine railway, large enough for hauling up vessels of the first<br />

class. The following vessels and engines were buiit by the Niagara Harbour<br />

and Dock Company between the years 1832 and 183'J. Steamboats^: Traveller,<br />

400 tons, Experiment, 200 tons and 25 horse power engine, Queen, 250 tons and<br />

i.') horse power, and Gore, 200 tons and 45 horse power; Hcliuonera .Jesse Woods,<br />

Pi-incess, Fanny, Toronto, Sovereign, 150 tons each; Land cnyiiie^: one of 12,<br />

one of 14, and one of 20 horse power. Vessels and engines built by the Niagara<br />

Harbour and Dock Company, between the yeai's 1839 and 1845. Steamboats<br />

Sovereign, 400 tons and 75 horse power, City of Toronto. 400 tons and two<br />

engines of 45 horse power each. Princess Royal, 444 tons and 80 horse power,<br />

America, 320 tons and 60 horse power. Chief Justice Robinson, 400 tons and<br />

75 horse power, .\dmiral, 400 tons and 68 horse power, Eclipse, 350 tons and<br />

Keagle, and Traveller, each 90 tons and 25 horse power; Schooners: William<br />

Cay ley. Shannon, Clyde, and Shamrock, 150 tons each; Barges: eighteen, of 40<br />

tons each; Emjines: two of 50 horse power for steamboat Ontario, one of 45<br />

liorse power for the Porcupine, one of 25 horse power for the Burlington, one of<br />

15 horse power for the propeller Precursor, and one of 15 horse power for the<br />

pi'opellor St. Thomas; Lainl ciKjinrs: one of 5, one of 8, four of 12, and one of<br />

2(1 horse power. Now building,—one steamboat of 800 tous and 150 horse<br />

Niagara is a pleasant place to reside in, particularly during the summer<br />

months.<br />
