MAIDSTONE.<br />
A Township in the county of Essex ; is hounded on the north by Lake St. Clair;<br />
on the east by the township of Sandwich ; on the west by Belle River; and on the<br />
south by the townships of Colchet^ter aud Gosfield. In Maidstone 16,184 acres are<br />
taken up, of which 1524 are under cultivation. The soil in this township is good,<br />
and the whole of the land fit for cultivation. Timber,—maple, elm, beech, oak,<br />
&c. &c. The River An.r Puces enters Lake St. Clair about the centre of this<br />
township, after running through its entire length, and the River Aux Peeches<br />
enters the lake about three miles below. Two thousand six hundi'ed acres of<br />
Crown lands are open for sale in Maidstone, at 8*. c'y per acre. The Canada<br />
Company possess 2,500 acres in Maidstone.<br />

MAITLAND RIVER.<br />
Takes its rise in the Indian territory north of the Huron Tract; passes through<br />
Wawanosh, into Colbome, where it is joined by the east branch (which takes<br />
its rise in the great Swamp), and enters Lake Huron at the town of Goderich.<br />
There is some beautifid scenery on its banks, and its bed for great part of its<br />
course is <strong>com</strong>posed of limestone rock. About eight miles from its mouth are<br />
some pretty falls. There are man}- good mill sites ou the Maitland, and its<br />
water-power is by some considered equal to that at Rochester.<br />
MAITLAND.<br />
A Village in the township of Augusta; situated on the St. Lawrence, five<br />
miles east of Brockville; the eastern road passing through it. It was built on<br />
the site of an old French fortification. The Kingston and ]\Iontreal steamboats<br />
touch here. Maitland contains about 100 inhabitants, who have an Episcopal<br />
church.<br />

Professions and Trades.—One steam grist-mill, two stores, two taverns, one<br />
blacksmith, one hatter, one shoemaker.<br />
MALAHIDE.<br />
A Township in the London District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />
of Bayham; on the north by Dorchester; on the west by Yarmouth; and on<br />
the south by Lake Erie. In IVhilahide 46,717 acres are taken up, 11,806 of<br />
which are imder cultivation. Catfish Creek, an excellent mill-stream, runs<br />
along the western border of the township to Lake Erie; and the township is<br />
also M-ell watered by numerous snuill streams. The timber of the south of the<br />
township is princijjally ])ine; and that of the north is ])ine, intermixed with hard<br />
wood. Malahide is well settled, and forms part of the Talbot settlement. The<br />
land is generally rolling, and there are many beautiful situations on Catfish<br />
Creek. Large quantities of lumber are annually exported from the township.<br />
There are three grist and seventeen saw-mills in Malahide.<br />
