GARDEN ISLAND.<br />
A small Island in Lake Ontario, opposite Kingston, containing about thirty<br />
acres. It is occupied by a firm who arr largely engaged in the rafting business,<br />
it being conveniently situated tor the i)urpose. A large nuniber of vessels are<br />
employed in bringing staves frum all jjarls of the western cuuiitry to the island,<br />
where they are unloaded, and the staves made into raits for the voyage to<br />
Quebec.<br />
GEOK(JETOWN.<br />
A flourishing Village in Esquesing, situated on a branch of the River Credit,<br />
17A miles north from Dundas Street. It contains about 7vJU inliabitants.<br />
Professions and Tnules.—One grist mill, one saw do., cloth factory, two<br />
tanneries, two stores, one foundry, one ashery, one tavern, one chair maker,<br />
three waggon makers, one cabinet maker, four blacksmiths, two tailors, three<br />
shoemakers.<br />
GEORGINA.<br />
A Township in the Home District ; is bounded on the north by Lake Simcoe;<br />
on the west by the township of Gwillimbury North; on the south by Scott; andou<br />
the east by Brock. In Georgina 11,827 acres are taken up, 2G.")3 of which are<br />
under cultivation. Much of the land in this township is hilly and broken ;<br />
some of it, however, is of excellent quality, and is heavily timbei-ed. The banks<br />
of the lake in Georgina are generally rather high. A stream, called Black<br />
River, runs through the east of the township, from south to north, on which is<br />
a village, called Bouchers', or Sutton Mills, situated about two miles south of<br />
the lake. On the lake shore, about three miles from the village, is an Episcopal<br />
church. The steamboat " Beaver " stops at Jackson's Point in the township,<br />

acre. There are two grist and three saw mills, and one distillery in the township,<br />

GERMANY, LITTLE.<br />
A German Settlement in the to-.> uship of ^^'aterloo, about nine miles southwest<br />
from Preston, within half a mile of the township of Guelph; contains a<br />
catholic church, two taverns, two blacksmiths, and about sixty inhabitants.<br />
GIBBS' MILLS.<br />
A Settlement \n the township of Whitby, about one mile south from Oshawa.<br />
It contains about 150 iijhabitants, grist mill, oatmeal do., pot barley do., distil-<br />
L^ry, tannery, and cloth factory (the machinery of which is worked by water),<br />
where excellent coarse cloths and blankets are made.<br />
GLANFORD.<br />
A Township in the Gore District; is bounded on the east by the township of<br />
Caistor; on the north by Barton; on the west by Ancaster; and on the south<br />
by Seneca. In Glanford, 18,805 acres are taken up, 7,.'342 of which are under<br />
cultivation. This is a small, well settled township, coutainmg good farms, and<br />
a mixed population. There is one saw mill in the township.<br />
