six tailors, seven shoemakers, one tobacconist, one bank agency, "Upper Canada."<br />

Principal Taverns.— "Howard's," and "Moffatt's."<br />

The quantity of wheat shipped from Niagara is small, amounting in 1844 to<br />

only 6000 bushels ; but large quantities of apples, peaches, and cider are shipped<br />

annually.<br />

NIAGARA.<br />

A Township in the Niagara District, is bounded on the east by the Niagara<br />

River; on the north by Lake Ontario; on the west by Grantham ; and on the<br />

south by Stamford. In Niagara •20,"23 acres are taken up, 10,555 of which are<br />

under cultivation. This is an old and well settled Township, containing good<br />

farms, and flourishing orchards. The town of Niagara is situated in the northeast<br />

corner of the township, and the villages of Queenston and St. David's in the<br />

south-east of the township; the two former on the Niagara River. The timber<br />

of the township is a mixture of hard wood and pine, and there is a considerable<br />

extent of oak plains in the east of the township. A mill stream, called " Four<br />

Mile Creek," waters the north of the township, and flows into Lake Ontario.<br />

There are three grist and two saw-mills in the township.<br />

Population in 1841, 2109; a large portion of whom ai-e emigrants from Great<br />

Britain.<br />

NICHOL.<br />

A Township in the Wellington District; is bounded on the north-east by the<br />

townships of Eramosa and Garafraxa; on the north-west by Peel; on the southwest<br />

by Woolwich; and on the south-east by Guelph. In Nichol 20.482 acres<br />

are taken up, 5,392 of which are under cultivation. This is a long narrow<br />

township, it is well settled, and contains excellent land, the greater part of which<br />

is rolling, and timbered with hard wood. The Grand River runs across the<br />

north of the township, on which are situated the villages of Fergus and Eiora;<br />

and a short distance west from the latter village is a Scotch settlement, called<br />

"Irvine Settlement. There are two grist and four saw-mills in the township.<br />

Population in 1842, 1019, who are principally from Scotland.<br />

Ratable property in the township, £16,479.<br />

NIPISSING LAKE.<br />

A large Lake to the north-west of Lake Huron ;<br />

about ninety-five miles north<br />

from Penetanguishine. It is connected with the Georgian Bay by French River,<br />

and with the Ottawa by the south-west branch. The passage, however, from<br />

the Georgian Ray to the Ottawa, can only be made in canoes, on account of the<br />

obstructions caused by portages in the south-west branch, and by rapids in<br />

French River. There are several islands in the lake, some of which are<br />

inhabited by Indians, wlio number somewhere about 200. Lake Nipissing is<br />

noted for its immense flocks of wild geese. French River has four portages; it<br />

is a considerable stream, and is in some places a mile in width, being studded<br />

•with islands. It has three mouths or entrances into the Georgian Ray.<br />

NISSOURL<br />

A Township in the Brock District; is bounded on the east by the township<br />

of Zorra; on the north by Downie aid Blanshard; on the west by London; and<br />

on the south by North Doreliestor and North Oxford. In Nissonri 29,784 acres<br />

are taken up, 5,918 of wliieh are under cultivation. The north branch of tlic<br />

Thames runs tlirough the north-west of the township, and tliere are several<br />

smaller branches spread over it. Tliere is a swamp in the south-west corner<br />

of the township. The village of St. Andrews is situated near the south-
